  Writing in Your Courses

Welcome instructors! Feel free to make full use of anything you see within these pages; they are designed with you in mind. We're also happy to talk with you about how you can incorporate writing effectively into your course design, how to plan a course around writing assignments that you want to use, and how to get ideas for appropriate, thoughtful assignments that will engage students and promote critical thinking.

We encourage you to contact us with any questions you may have. The Center for Teaching Excellence also offers an array of resources and programs for teachers looking to improve student learning in their classes.

Instructors Often Ask...

Why should I include more writing in my course requirements? How can I balance my efforts to require more writing and respond to more writing—with my current time constraints? What types of support are available for me and for student writers? Won’t requiring more writing increase the possibility of plagiarism?

What Writing Can Do

Deciding to include writing in your courses demonstrates your commitment to teaching the writing of your discipline. Research indicates that

  • students learn about subject matter more effectively when writing about it
  • much of the writing you require need not be evaluated
  • writing is a process that takes time, care, revision, and response
