What does it mean to encourage students to visit the Writing Center?

Encouraging means to support, to announce, to nudge. As much as we believe
that students improve as writers if they work with writing consultants,
we would not want visits to be required or tied to grades and evaluation.
Students who choose to work with writing consultants--with the support
of their instructors--are actively engaged in learning more about writing
and about themselves as writers.
Below is a paragraph that describes the Writing Center. We hope you will
copy and paste this paragraph right into your next course syllabus. Please
explain to your students that, while consultants will not proofread and
edit papers, they will provide feedback on drafts in progress and share
strategies for proofreading and editing.

Most colleges and universities have a writing
center, a place for students to talk about their writing with trained
peer consultants. At KU, our writing center has locations across campus
called Writer's Roosts. Please check the website at www.writing.ku.edu
for current locations and hours. The Writing Center welcomes both
drop-ins and appointments, and there is no charge for their services.

The Writing Center consultants work with writers from all disciplines.
These qualified consultants are prepared to look at papers from architecture
to zoology. We are also able to work with students at any level and at
any stage of their writing process, from first draft to final product.
Instructors with any questions or concerns about how the writing consulting
service works should contact the director of the KU Writing Center, Terese Thonus.
