Want more info on deterring plagiarism?

The KU Writing Center also has collected several links to resources you can use to learn more about effective strategies for reducing plagiarism.

The University of Kansas subscribes to the digital plagiarism detection program, TurnItIn.com. Faculty users have found the program to be both effective in determining appropriate use of sources in student papers and effective as a deterrent to plagiarism.

You can learn how to use the program by scheduling an individual orientation. Just contact the KU Writing Center.

To get started now, you can follow the instructions below, which are designed to get users up and running without additional instruction. Please inform students in advance that you might run checks using Turnitin.com in order for the process to run smoothly and fairly. If you plan to use the program, please insert the following statement into your syllabus:

The issue of digital plagiarism has raised concerns about ethics, student writing experiences, and academic integrity. KU subscribes to a digital plagiarism detection program called Turnitin.com, which may be used to check papers submitted in this course. You may be asked to submit your papers in a digital format (e-mail attachment, BlackBoard™ digital drop box or on disk) so that your paper can be checked against web pages and databases of existing papers. Although you may never have engaged in intentional plagiarism, many students do incorporate sources without citations; this program can alert me to your academic needs.

Getting Started with Turnitin.com
You must work through three levels before submitting a paper: join an account, set up a class (or classes), and create an assignment. A KU account password is required (just once) for you to set up your account.

The KU site license for Turnitin.com is maintained at KU Instructional Development and Support (IDS). Please contact them to receive the account information.
